Exclusive Interview with JU Da General: From Foster Child to Hip-Hop Sensation
1. Can you share a bit about your upbringing in Chicago and how it influenced your music?
Growing up in Rockford was hard, surrounded by dope fiends and poverty. I spent most of my childhood selling drugs and just hustling, period. I spent a lot of my time trying to come up with a dollar. This environment instilled a hustle mentality in me that reflects in my music.
2. How did growing up with your grandmother and helping to raise your six siblings shape you as a person and an artist?
Growing up with my grandmother was hard. We didn’t have a lot, but she did a lot with what she had. As a kid, I didn’t understand the real value of what she was doing, but today it’s valued more than anything in my life. Her resilience and resourcefulness have deeply influenced who I am today.
3. What initially drew you to rapping as a form of therapy and self-expression?
Rapping caught my attention young; I always loved music. I would randomly freestyle with some of my close friends. It became a way for me to express my thoughts and emotions when trust was a rare commodity in my life.
4. Can you describe the process and inspiration behind your hit single “I Need Money”?
“I Need Money” was inspired by the movie “How High.” I lived that movie as a kid; it was so funny to me. My siblings and I used to make fake grills and joke about the saying “I need money.” It brought a sense of nostalgia and humor into my music.
5. What was it like collaborating with Louie Ray on “I Need Money”?
Collaborating with Louie Ray was an experience I won’t ever forget. He is also from the Midwest, so it felt like home. He was so humble, and we actually linked up the entire time I was in Houston. Louie is somebody I would for sure like to work with again.
6. Your upcoming EP “Truth A Do” is highly anticipated. What themes and messages can fans expect from this project?
My EP “Truth A Do,” dropping this summer, gets very deep into my upbringing as well as where I am today. It also includes a song for the ladies. Fans can expect raw and unfiltered glimpses into my life and personal experiences.
7. How do you balance the personal and artistic aspects of your life in your music?
Balancing music and my personal life is always a challenge. I am a mother of three, and my support system is small but remarkable. It’s a constant juggling act, but I find ways to make it work.
8. What challenges have you faced as a female artist in the hip-hop industry, and how have you overcome them?
My biggest challenge in my career right now is getting people to hear me! But I won’t stop. I keep pushing through and striving to get my voice out there, regardless of the obstacles.
9. Who are your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound?
My biggest influence with music is the entire hip-hop culture, from Tupac to Lil Baby. They have all shaped my sound and my approach to storytelling through music.
10. Can you walk us through your creative process when writing and recording a new track?
My writing process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to three days. I sit in a quiet room alone and think about how I can turn my experiences into rhymes. When I experience writer’s block, I record what I have down and get a feel for the rest of the track. Sometimes it’s the beat that I don’t feel, or sometimes the bars need more work.
11. What has been the most rewarding moment of your career so far?
The most rewarding moment of my career is receiving messages from strangers telling me I changed their life or their morning, or simply telling me to keep going. I’m doing this for them now. It’s a world of women like me—this is for us!
12. How do you stay grounded and motivated in such a competitive industry?
My family keeps me motivated and grounded. I’m doing this for them. I’m willing to go through it so they don’t have to, and I’m strong enough to handle whatever may come my way.
13. What message do you hope to convey through your music to your fans?
I hope the message my fans receive is: this is me. You can still tell the truth and be loved and liked. There are still females who rap about more than sex. It doesn’t matter what you came from; focus on where you’re going. Even if it’s only you believing in you, keep pushing. We’re still grinding!
14. Looking back, what advice would you give to your younger self when you first started rapping?
The biggest advice I could give myself looking back when I first started rapping would be: drop! Get on that pad and put this music on the streets. Show them you’re great too!
15. What are your long-term goals and dreams for your career in hip-hop?
My long-term goal with my career is to make a true mark and touch lives just like mine. Make real differences in people’s lives and be known for just that. Bless those who blessed me, and be to someone else what I wish I had. Focus on the youth! JU Da General up next!
