Can you tell us about your early life in Woodbridge, VA, and how it has influenced your music and artistic journey, especially considering your upbringing on the south side of Chicago?
I actually don’t remember my time in Virginia. I was only there until I was 2 years old. But Virginia is definitely a place I want to visit now that I’m older.
What inspired you to become a multi-talented artist, photographer, and videographer in addition to your career in music? How do these creative pursuits intersect in your work?
I saw all of these ventures and all the opportunities that could come with it. I also seen all the benefits of having your hand in all the creative ventures. It helps my songwriting ability just as much as my photography, and producing skills also.
You’ve released numerous mixtapes and singles since 2021. Can you share some insights into your creative process and how you decide what stories and themes to explore in your music?
The biggest thing when it comes to making songs for me, at least, is to listen when the beat speaks to you. The beat usually tells me what story it wants me to write this particular time. It could be a love song, a heartbreak song, a memory that I have in my early childhood, or even a conversation I had with someone.
Your music has a distinct and unique sound. How would you describe your musical style, and what artists or genres have had the most significant influence on your work?
I would describe my music as unpredictable, original, honest, and transparent. I don’t put a ceiling on my art to please the crowd. My music is relatable because I’m human with emotions who deals with actual things just like the next person. I’m heavily influenced by J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, Lauryn Hill, and JID.
In your own words, you mentioned that “God is the fuel that makes sure I never end up on E.” Could you elaborate on the role of spirituality or personal beliefs in your music and creative journey?
I grew up in a church. My faith plays a big part in why I think the way I do. It also helped my ability to use my voice. I have a mixtape called “Written in Red” which has nothing and something to do with the Bible at the same time. In the bible Jesus’s words were written in red to signify that it was him that was speaking in the bible. I wanted to have the same affect over everything I said in my songs on that project.
Many artists find inspiration in their life experiences. Can you share a specific moment or event that had a profound impact on your music or creative direction?
Back in 2021, J Cole went on tour for his album ‘Off Season’ and it was the first concert I have ever been to and it was my favorite artist. I was trying to learn one of his songs for like 2 weeks and performed that song at the concert. When he performed it I did the whole song with him word for word and it was like a bird’s eye view moment. I don’t know how I was going to get to that point, but I knew that was where I was meant to be. On that stage.
Your visual artistry is a significant aspect of your work. How do you approach creating visuals that complement your music, and do you find that your photography and videography inform your music or vice versa?
I just picture what I want in my visuals or something that I can do and I do my best to try to make that Idea come to life. My skills behind the camera have really compliment my music making skills and vice versa. I have a mixtape titled Pursuit of Happyness which I structure just like the movie, but in my own way.
Hip-hop is a genre that often reflects social and cultural issues. Are there any particular topics or societal matters that you feel passionate about addressing through your music?
I have addressed the biggest issue in my city which is gun violence. I have addressed the unfortunate passing of kids to gun violence in the city. I am very passionate about this topic mainly because I have family members and friends who have fallen victim to the violence.
As a rising star in the hip-hop scene, what are your goals and aspirations for the future? Are there any collaborations or projects on the horizon that you’re excited about?
I want to become one of the greatest artists to ever touch a mic, I also want to tell the story for my people who feel like their voice isn’t loud enough to be heard. Right now I am excited to announce the release of my upcoming project titled ‘Truth&Consequences’ that is set to release in November.
Lastly, what message or feeling do you hope your audience takes away from your music, and what advice would you give to aspiring artists looking to make their mark in the industry?
I hope my audience can find some kind of comfort and safe heaven in my music. I want to let everybody know that you can be anything and everything, but limiting yourself to one dream or one calling can be another form of selling yourself short. Try new things and don’t be afraid to fail.
